Diane Bessette is Of Counsel to NCYL, specializing in mental health issues in the juvenile justice system. Diane is currently the civil advocacy coordinator for the Alameda County Juvenile Mental Health Court and is focusing some of her time on transition issues for foster youth. Before joining NCYL, Diane worked as a consulting attorney at the East Bay Community Law Center, as a staff attorney at the Ninth Circuit, and as a staff attorney at a non-profit providing family law representation to low-income families in Alameda County. Diane also worked as an adjunct assistant law professor at Hastings from 1993-2002, where she taught Legal Writing and Research, Moot Court, Appellate Advocacy, Interviewing and Counseling and Community Property. Diane also volunteered as a court-appointed mediator in the Alameda County Superior Court. Diane received her J.D. in 1990 from UC-Hastings College of the Law, where she was a founder of the Hastings Women’s Law Journal. Diane received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Tufts University in 1985.
