NCYL, Other Youth Advocates Victorious in Efforts to Ban Juvenile Death Penalty.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to ban the juvenile death penalty marks a major victory for the National Center for Youth Law (NCYL) and other child advocacy groups that have worked for years to abolish the practice. NCYL has long been an active opponent of the juvenile death penalty and joined about 50 other child advocacy groups in filing an amicus curiae brief urging the Court to ban the practice. The Court ruled March 1 that this country’s rare practice of executing criminal offenders under the age of 18 is unconstitutional because it constitutes “cruel and unusual punishment”.
