Former NCYL undergraduate intern Ben Winig, now an attorney at McDonough Holland & Allen PC, in Oakland and Sacramento, took a leave of absence from the firm to work on the Obama campaign. As Jewish Vote Deputy Director for the campaign, Ben spent six weeks trying to sway the Jewish vote in Pennsylvania. Ben explains: “I helped manage and formulate a persuasive campaign targeting undecided Jewish voters throughout Pennsylvania. President Obama has always been a great friend to the Jewish community, and part of my job was to make it clear to the Jewish community in Pennsylvania that he is a strong supporter of issues of concern to Jews, including our commitment to social and economic justice and a just and lasting peace for Israel and her neighbors. Our team also had to react against the vitriolic smear campaign against President-elect Obama within the Jewish community, and I am proud that we successfully fought the smears (or as we liked to say, "fought the schmears").
Also working on the Jewish vote in Pennsylvania was NCYL Board President Peter Edelman. Says Ben, "I had the fortunate opportunity to campaign with Peter, and watching him engage Pennsylvania voters was both educational and inspirational. NCYL is in good hands."
