Workshop: Opportunities for Legal Aid Advocates and Public Defenders to Improve Outcomes for Youth through Juvenile Mental Health Courts This session covers a new approach to working with youth with mental illness who get caught up in the delinquency system. Juvenile mental health courts link youth and their families to legal services and community mental health services to reduce rates of detention and improve outcomes.

The Braam Oversight Panel meets four times a year to review Washington’s efforts to reform its foster care system, provide stable placements and mental health services for foster children, and adequately train and support foster parents. The panel is charged with overseeing the implementation of the 2004 settlement agreement in Braam v. Washington. NCYL is co-counsel in the case. The named plaintiff, Jessica Braam, lived in 34 foster homes by the time the suit was filed in 1998. To find out more about the Braam case, click here.
